Statement 2010
Gill graduated with a sculpture degree 20 years ago and has produced sculpture and drawings since, until recently when she took up oil painting for the first time. Sculpture is still evident in the way she sculpts the paint, the objects she paints become solid. The surface of the pears becomes flesh with the quality of a Reuben's nude, the inside of the pomegranate, meaty and luscious.
By extending the painting onto the frame each painting becomes a sculptural object. They are small, dark and precious with the feel of an old, Dutch still life yet the treatment of the paint and the way Gill scratches into the surface makes them utterly contemporary.
